He didn't know what happened or how it all happened. Jack woke up on his workday feeling groggy and pain in his neck. He looked in his mirror and saw a pale green face. Eyelids redden and snot caked in his nostrils.
Jack took a deep breath, then the cough came. It felt like he was trying to hack up a ball of hair like his cat would. He hacked and hacked. Then something came out of his mouth and fell to the floor. He took a glimpse at it. Its split-pea soup tone made Jack repulsed. The slime slithered across the vinyl boards and through the crack of the bottom of the door.
Jack stared at it and wondered what was happening. Phlegm was not supposed to do that, at least, not in reality. Then he coughed again. And again. And again. Until, a whole blob of phlegm plopped on the floor in a slimy splat. It then slithered out of the room the same way as the rest did. Jack took upon himself to figure out what was going on.
He walked out into the hallway, looking for the phlegm. He heard a bubbling suck and a slimy pop. As if there was an inhale and exhale inside the bathroom. He opened the door to see if the phlegm was in there, and sure enough, the green blob grew in the corner of the tub. And how it grew!
The blob looked like a rotten green egg with strings of veins pulsing giving life to within. Jack poked at it to see if it was alive. But one poke made this thing pop. And as it popped, something slumped to the floor. It was naked and fleshy. Jack carefully looked at it. It appeared to be familiar.
“Good God,” he exclaimed. “It's me!”
Jack poked at the copy of himself and nudged it with his foot. He went to the bedroom to call the cops or maybe the scientists at the college to analyze whatever this thing was. First, he called the office to take off work. Then, he dialed for the police. Jack walked back to the bathroom. But by the time he got there, his double was gone. The egg had become slimy phlegm once again. He heard a man from the receiver.
“This is Officer Cullen, state your reason why you called.”
Something grabbed and choked him as the officer asked again. The pressure squeezed his neck until it snapped. Jack's body laid limp as the copy of him spoke in his voice:
“Wrong number, sir.”
Disturbing!
